Leading groundwork, civil engineering and RC structures contractor CJ Haughey Construction, has been awarded a £17million civil engineering package on the construction of a new gas fired power station in Pembrokeshire, South West Wales being built for RWE npower.
The contract was awarded by sub-contractor John Sisk & Son Ltd (Sisk) working for the main engineering , procurement and construction contractor Alstom, a global leader in the supply of technologies and services to the power and rail industries. The project will see the construction of a full turnkey, gas-fired combined-cycle 2,000MW power plant and will be the largest of its type in the UK. Once in operation, it will be capable of supplying electricity to around 3 million homes.
The contract has a 54 week programme with a host of challenging milestones. CJ Haughey Construction will be undertaking all civil engineering work on site. The scope includes earthworks, the installation of cooling water GRP pipe work and steel lined concrete pipes, complemented by extensive drainage, duct work, and temporary works.
The new power station will deliver a significant boost to the Pembroke economy, It is estimated that up to £1.75m will be spent with small local business enterprises during sub-contractor Sisk’s period on site, with further subcontractors including CJ Haughey Construction encouraged to make full use of local hotels, accommodation, restaurants, transport and shops throughout the duration of the construction work.

The contract win comes hot on the heels of the announcement that CJ Haughey Construction has been awarded Emerging Contractor of the Year at the NCE/ CECA 2009 Awards.
